You can reroute anything, if you're willing...

Almost any feature in Pro/E can be re-routed if you have the patience, including buggered up merges.

Pro/E is first and foremost, a big database of geometry. When something goes wrong, Pro/E offers you a couple of options to repair the database. The most common method is to re-define the feature. The most powerful method is to re-route the feature.

The most efficient way to re-route a feature is to replace the references ahead of time. (Yeah, like when do I ever get a chance to do that? Check out: (Xref) You know you're good when you can re-route ahead of failure) Unfortunately, most people will end doing their re-routing during failure resolution.

The first thing to remember is: Re-routing is something you don't really get a second chance at. If you accept this, and make up your mind to follow a very methodical process, you can take advantage of the "Re-route all children" global database replace, which is the most efficient means of re-routing lost references. So, before you go any further, clip suppress your model and save it.

Now, get a copy of the old model with the features that you want to re-route still intact. Check out ((Xref) Forcing multiple versions of a model into memory) and (Xref) Things you can do in an alternate window for helpful hints.

The step-by-step should go something like this:

  1. Get "Info" for the failed feature in the reference model.
  2. Resume all features in the failed model.
  3. "Investigate" and "Show Ref" for the failed feature.
  4. "Quick fix" the feature by "reroute"-ing "Missing Refs".
  5. When you replace the missing reference, Pro/E will ask you if you want to re-route the current feature or all features (You won't get this option if you chose to reroute "all"). Go for the gusto - re-route all features and let the model regenerate.
  6. Let the model regenerate until it fails.
  7. Investigate the references for the failed feature. Note the ID number and the number(s) of the missing references.
  8. Clip suppress and save.
  9. Repeat the process ad nauseum.
